Coinbase identifies configuration error as root cause of July platform outage

Coinbase has published a postmortem outlining the technical cause behind a platform-wide service disruption that lasted approximately 50 minutes on July 14. According to an official post-incident analysis, the outage resulted from an unintended misconfiguration during a routine infrastructure update.
The disruption occurred while executing a planned, “low-risk” configuration change to a shared production Kubernetes cluster. A naming collision between two resources, which went undetected by pre-production safety checks, rendered a critical network gateway unavailable. This failure interrupted the platform’s asynchronous workflows, which coordinate trade settlement, fund transfers, and payment authorizations, effectively pausing money movement across the exchange.
During the interval, which spanned from roughly 12:37 p.m. to 1:25 p.m. ET, retail and institutional trading, deposits, withdrawals, and Coinbase Card transactions were temporarily halted. On-chain swap services routed through Base and Solana, along with select Prime functions, were also affected. Coinbase confirmed that user funds were never at risk and that standard operations resumed once the network blockage was resolved.
The July event marks the third notable operational disruption for the exchange in 2026, each driven by separate technical factors. In May, a cooling failure at a third-party cloud data center triggered a roughly seven-hour trading halt. In June, an invalid block on the Base layer-2 network caused a two-hour network interruption. The July outage resolved within an hour and originated from an internal configuration update rather than external cloud infrastructure or consensus-layer failures.
The postmortem confirms the incident has been fully remediated and does not announce broader product changes or compensation measures. Coinbase stated that the configuration conflict bypassed internal pre-deployment validation, and indicated that the review of the incident is concluded. The platform has operated without reported disruption since services were restored.
