Cloudflare adds wallets for AI agents through x402 protocol

Cloudflare has introduced Cloudflare Wallets, a new wallet system built to let AI agents make payments through the x402 protocol. The company says the product is designed for agentic commerce, with separate wallet types for human users and AI agents, and with spending controls built into the setup.

According to Cloudflare, Account Wallets are controlled by people, while Virtual Wallets are created for agents. The company says those virtual wallets can be used to pay for APIs, MCP tools, content and other services, using stablecoin micropayments and configurable guardrails such as spending caps, allowlists and maximum transaction sizes.

Identity and spending controls for agent payments

Cloudflare also says each wallet can be paired with a human-readable handle, giving agents a consistent identity when interacting with merchants. That setup is meant to make agent payments easier to track without requiring a separate account for every service the agent accesses.

The company describes the system as part of a broader push to support machine-driven transactions on the web. It says Cloudflare Wallets is linked to its Monetization Gateway and x402 support, positioning the wallet system as one piece of a wider payment flow for services that may be consumed by software agents rather than by humans directly.

Cloudflare has also said the wallets can be used to store stablecoins, receive funds and support controlled spending from the main account. The structure is intended to let an agent test or buy services within preset limits, while leaving the owner able to approve additional funds if needed.

Cloudflare’s announcement adds another layer to the emerging x402 ecosystem, but the practical reach of the system will depend on how many merchants and developers support it. For now, the company is presenting Cloudflare Wallets as infrastructure for agent payments, not as a completed marketplace on its own.
