For years, market participants evaluated ecosystems primarily through the volume of capital committed to smart contracts. However, tracking gross deposits without evaluating operational cash flows distorts the viability of networks attempting to retain users without excessive dilution.

Total value locked measures temporarily parked capital liquidity. A substantial portion of these deposits responds directly to governance token emissions, exiting the ecosystem as soon as nominal annual yields decline below prevailing market opportunity costs.

The ratio between collected fees and retained protocol revenue serves as the foundational test. When users pay direct settlement fees for transaction priority, they demonstrate that blockspace possesses intrinsic utility independent of artificial reward distribution schemes.

Enterprise-grade settlement platforms prioritize predictable transaction pricing over superficial asset totals. Institutional entities require transparent frameworks where settlement costs reflect organic demand for finality rather than temporary liquidity mining campaigns subsidized by protocol treasuries.

As the industry develops, organic demand for ledger space will distinguish protocols with positive net income from networks relying on nominal liquidity figures that face severe contraction when normalizing programmatic token emissions.

If a decentralized network generates annual transaction fees exceeding the total token issuance required to secure consensus across two market cycles, it will establish verifiable economic autonomy without requiring inflationary subsidies to maintain operational stability.
