Solana reduces target slot time to 250ms at epoch 1037

Solana has lowered its target slot time to 250 milliseconds at epoch 1037, according to reporting on the network change. The adjustment reduces the target from 300 milliseconds and marks another step in a staged plan to speed up slot production on mainnet.
BREAKING: @Solana slot time has dropped to 250ms for the first time after the latest reduction under SIMD-0525 went live at epoch 1037.

The change is described as part of SIMD-0525, a proposal that moves Solana toward a 200-millisecond target over time. In practical terms, shorter slot times mean the network starts new slots more frequently, which can reduce the time users wait for slot-level feedback.
Reporting on the upgrade says the change was activated at the start of epoch 1037. It also notes that the network is keeping total execution capacity roughly unchanged by proportionally reducing per-slot compute limits, rather than simply adding more throughput.
That distinction matters because a faster slot schedule does not automatically mean the network is doing more work overall. The update appears focused on latency rather than a direct increase in capacity.
A shorter leader window
The change also shortens Solana’s four-slot leader window from 1.2 seconds to 1.0 second, based on the same reporting. That can matter for how long a leader has to handle transaction inclusion within a given window.
The upgrade follows earlier reductions in Solana’s target slot time, moving the network through prior stages before reaching the 250-millisecond target. The latest step brings the schedule closer to the proposal’s longer-term 200-millisecond goal, though the reported change itself is limited to the current epoch activation.
