Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has voiced concerns about the rise of meme and political cryptocurrencies, such as TRUMP, which he views as vehicles for corruption and scams within the crypto space. A Legal Loophole Enabling Abuse

Buterin pointed out that the issue doesn’t solely lie with meme cryptocurrencies but also with a regulatory loophole created under the tenure of former U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Chair Gary Gensler. This gap allows governance tokens to be treated differently from traditional securities, opening the door to large-scale manipulation and abuse.

As an example, he highlighted that nearly 94% of TRUMP tokens are controlled by just 40 wallets, a situation that has already led to the theft of nearly $1 billion. Buterin argues that these types of coins not only cause financial harm but have also become tools for political bribery, even involving foreign entities.

Additionally, he criticized Gensler’s inaction in providing regulatory clarity, which has allowed bad actors to thrive in an environment with distorted incentives.

A Vision for an Ethical Future

Despite the current challenges, Buterin maintains an optimistic outlook for the crypto industry. He proposes that the DeFi community take a proactive approach by educating new users and promoting honest and sustainable fundraising mechanisms. According to him, it is possible to align community values with privacy, security, and open standards, fostering a stronger and more ethical ecosystem.

In his view, the growth of the crypto sector should not be indiscriminate but rather guided by a “defensive acceleration” philosophy. This approach prioritizes the creation of solutions that protect and strengthen the system against internal and external threats.

Buterin concluded by urging developers and industry leaders to reject destructive trends and focus on building a future rooted in transparency, responsible innovation, and long-term growth.

His message serves as a clear reminder that the evolution of the crypto sector relies not only on technology but also on the ethical decisions made by those driving change.
