The Bitcoin Market Is Getting Too Comfortable With the $90,000 Narrative

Although a rebound to $90,000 remains a market expectation, recent trading activity suggests that Bitcoin still faces significant headwinds. Citi has raised its 12-month Bitcoin price target to $113,000, citing stronger institutional demand and improving conditions for the broader crypto market.
However, selling pressure remains elevated, leveraged exposure appears to be increasing, and Bitcoin ETFs have seen renewed outflows. This raises an important question: are traders becoming too confident in a recovery before buying demand has strengthened enough to support it?
Bitcoin’s $90,000 Rally Faces a Problem
Bitcoin recently approached $87,000 before pulling back, raising questions about whether buyers have enough strength to sustain another rally. Coinbase-related market data also points to a possible weakness in demand on the platform. According to the market commentary below, Bitcoin’s price spread relative to other exchanges reached its widest level in two months. The significance of that signal depends on how the spread is calculated: by itself, it does not establish that Coinbase users are net sellers.

Meanwhile, concerns have grown in the derivatives market. Despite the price pullback, funding rates remain positive and open interest continues to rise. Together, these indicators are consistent with sustained demand for leveraged positions, but they do not prove that traders are uniformly betting on higher prices. Open interest measures outstanding derivatives contracts, while positive funding generally means that long positions are paying short positions in perpetual futures markets.
The risk increases if Bitcoin continues to fall while leveraged positions remain open. Losses could prompt some traders to reduce exposure or trigger liquidations, potentially adding to selling pressure. A decline in open interest could indicate that positions are being closed, but it would not, on its own, establish that the market has stabilized. Stronger spot-market buying would provide a clearer sign of renewed demand.
For now, the market appears caught between hopes for a recovery and continued selling pressure. Another attempt at $90,000 may prove difficult unless demand improves.
Citi’s $113,000 Bitcoin Target Meets a Different Market
Citi raised its 12-month Bitcoin price target from $82,000 to $113,000 on October 1. The bank cited stronger cryptocurrency activity, regulatory developments, and growing institutional interest. It also expects financial advisers and brokerages to increase their Bitcoin exposure over time.

Citi has raised its 12-month Bitcoin target to $113,000 from $82,000, implying roughly 35% upside from current levels near $83,900.

Recent ETF activity, however, has pointed in the opposite direction. Outflows have resumed after earlier inflows helped Bitcoin gain ground. This suggests that institutional demand may be uneven in the short term, even as Citi anticipates greater investment over the coming year. The scale and persistence of those outflows are important to assessing their significance; without a consistent reporting cutoff and specific flow figures, the available information does not establish how much they have offset earlier inflows.
There is also a risk that some traders have positioned themselves ahead of the demand anticipated in bullish forecasts. Investors expecting a quick move toward $90,000 may have entered positions before stronger buying materialized. If ETF outflows persist and spot demand remains weak, some traders could reconsider those bets, potentially adding to selling pressure.
Still, Citi’s forecast covers the next 12 months, not the next few trading sessions. Bitcoin could weaken further before institutional investment picks up. That distinction matters when short-term market conditions remain under pressure.
Bitcoin’s Recovery Depends on the 82,000–83,000 Range
Bitcoin would need to reclaim $83,000 to strengthen the case for a recovery. Several daily closes above that level could suggest that buyers are regaining control and put pressure on short sellers. Such a move might also encourage traders to open new positions, although a sustained rally would still require follow-through buying.

The weekly chart places additional importance on $82,000, which the cited market analysis identifies as a major trading-range high in May. If that level continues to act as a key reference point, a weekly close below it would weaken the recovery case and raise doubts about whether the earlier breakout can hold.
Broader market conditions are also creating challenges for Bitcoin. Rising U.S. Treasury yields, a stronger dollar, and higher energy prices can make investors more cautious about riskier assets. If those pressures persist, buyers may hesitate to commit fresh capital even if Bitcoin begins to recover. These factors provide market context, but they do not by themselves establish the cause of each price move.
Could Bitcoin Test $75,000 Before Reaching $90,000?
The 80,000–81,500 area is the next potential support zone highlighted in the cited technical analysis. Buyers could step in around this range and attempt to slow the decline. However, support is not guaranteed: repeated tests or continued selling could weaken the zone if demand fails to improve.
Bitcoin is sitting at a critical price level that could determine its next major move.

If Bitcoin moves decisively below $80,000, $75,000 and potentially $72,000 could become subsequent areas of interest. These are conditional downside scenarios, not firm price predictions. Their relevance depends on how the market behaves around intervening support levels and on the longer-term technical indicators traders are monitoring, including the daily 200-period moving averages and the bull market support band.
The concern is not simply that Bitcoin has struggled while major forecasts remain bullish. Rather, market indicators suggest that some traders may be positioning for gains before stronger buying has confirmed the recovery. That could leave the market vulnerable if confidence in a rebound fades.
Bitcoin could still attempt another move toward $90,000 if ETF inflows return, spot demand strengthens, and the price reclaims the 82,000–83,000 area. If support near $80,000 fails, a move toward $75,000 becomes a plausible downside scenario. Until buying conditions improve, neither outcome is assured.
