USDC receives first significant-token classification under MiCA

The European Banking Authority has classified USDC as the first significant e-money token under the EU’s MiCA framework, a designation that brings the stablecoin under a stricter supervisory setup in Europe.

In an official press release, the EBA said the classification places USDC into the category of significant tokens for oversight purposes. The move does not change USDC’s stated purpose, but it does change how it is supervised in the bloc.

Supervision splits between the EBA and France’s ACPR

Analyst posts referencing an EBA notice dated Oct. 14 said the updated oversight arrangement takes effect on Nov. 12. Under that structure, the EBA is expected to oversee reserve, liquidity and redemption-related matters tied to USDC’s significant-token status, while France’s ACPR retains other supervisory responsibilities, including governance oversight.

The distinction matters because MiCA allows significant e-money tokens to fall under dual supervision rather than relying only on a national authority. The classification is based on size and financial-system relevance, rather than on any indication that the token is being withdrawn from circulation or that its use case has changed.

USDC’s designation makes it the first e-money token to receive significant status under MiCA, marking a procedural milestone for one of the largest stablecoins used in Europe.
