New Jersey Moves to Drop Coinbase Case, Clearing the Way for Staking to Resume

Coinbase said New Jersey has informed the company that it intends to rescind a June 2023 summary penalty and cease-and-desist order, a step the exchange says clears the way for crypto staking to resume in the state. The update appeared in Coinbase’s Q3 2026 Form 10-Q filed with the SEC.
The filing frames the development as a move by New Jersey’s regulators to withdraw the earlier action rather than a fresh enforcement case. Coinbase said the change would allow staking activity to restart for users in the state, after the service had been limited there for more than three years.
Social posts circulated the news shortly after the filing drew attention, with Coinbase’s own account saying staking was “so back” in New Jersey. The company’s filing is the clearest public source for the procedural update currently available.
The development is relevant mainly for Coinbase customers in New Jersey, where staking had been affected by the earlier order. The filing does not spell out every operational detail of the resumption, but it indicates that the regulatory position has changed enough for the company to treat staking as eligible to restart.
