20,000 Phones Affected: Solana Announces the End of Support for the Solana Saga

Solana Mobile has confirmed the end of support for the Solana Saga. Its first crypto phone will stop receiving software updates and security patches. The announcement was made this Monday by a community manager on the official Solana Mobile Discord. This decision affects the 20,000 Saga devices produced.

Support for the Saga lasted just over two years. Its original launch was in April 2023. The device’s last major update was to Android 14. Furthermore, its final security patch is dated November 2024. This lifecycle is significantly shorter than the industry standard. Companies like Apple or Google offer seven years of support for their phones. Saga devices will remain operational, but without protection against new threats.

The Saga had a discreet initial launch. However, it gained enormous demand in late 2023. This occurred when users discovered that airdrops tied to the phone exceeded its cost. This phenomenon validated the concept of an integrated dApp store. Now, attention is focused on the new Seeker phone. This more economical model has already begun shipping to those who pre-ordered.

Are the 20,000 Saga Phones Now Obsolete?

The end of support for the Solana Saga forces users to accept new risks. Although the phones work, the lack of patches makes them vulnerable. Solana Mobile indicated that wallets can be restored on other devices. The move aims to concentrate efforts on the Seeker. This new model has secured over 150,000 pre-orders. The Seeker includes updated hardware and a future ecosystem token (SKR). The Seeker’s success is crucial for the mobile strategy of the ecosystem.

Solana Mobile’s decision closes the Saga’s chapter. This device is now considered obsolete in security terms. Owners must decide whether to migrate to the Seeker or assume the risks. The new phone, priced at $500, represents the next phase. The market will watch if the Seeker can maintain the initial momentum. Its adoption will determine the future of the company’s Web3 phones.
