MetaMask 2025: A New Chapter in Web3 Innovation

TL;DR

  • Programmable Accounts & Batched Transactions: MetaMask will transition from EOAs to smart, programmable accounts, enabling streamlined processes and lower gas costs through one-click “Approve & Swap” batched transactions.
  • Multichain Integration: The wallet is set to support Solana in May and Bitcoin in Q3 2025, backed by a Multichain API launching in June that connects dapps across Ethereum, Linea, Solana, and Bitcoin.
  • Enhanced UI and Security: A redesigned home screen, profile sync, MetaMask Delegation Framework, and multiple Secret Recovery Phrases.

MetaMask, the popular crypto wallet, has released its 2025 roadmap, focusing on significant upgrades to enhance the Web3 experience. The roadmap aims to simplify user interactions, improve transaction reliability, and introduce new features. One of the standout updates is the transition from externally owned accounts to programmable accounts, facilitated by EIP-7702.

This shift will enable EOAs to function like smart accounts, streamlining processes and reducing gas costs. Additionally, MetaMask will introduce ERC-5792 batched transactions, allowing users to perform one-click “Approve & Swap” actions.

Multichain Integration

MetaMask’s roadmap also emphasizes seamless multichain connectivity. The wallet will integrate support for Solana in May and Bitcoin in Q3 2025, allowing users to engage with these ecosystems without the need for separate wallets or wrapped tokens.

A Multichain API, set to launch in June, will enable dapps to connect to Ethereum, Linea, Solana, and Bitcoin simultaneously. This integration will simplify tasks like portfolio management and bridging, enhancing the overall user experience.

Security and Functionality

To bolster wallet security and functionality, MetaMask will introduce the MetaMask Delegation Framework. This system will allow users to grant customizable permissions, enhancing both security and user control.

The framework will enable users to delegate specific tasks while maintaining overall control, making it easier to balance usability with high-level security. Additionally, MetaMask will support multiple Secret Recovery Phrases, allowing users to manage multiple wallets from a single instance.

User Interface Improvements

MetaMask’s user interface will undergo a significant redesign to accommodate multichain support. A new home screen, debuting next month, will display assets across networks, providing a more intuitive and connected experience.

Profile Sync, arriving in April for browser extensions and May for mobile, will keep settings consistent across devices. The MetaMask Card will also be introduced, allowing users to spend their crypto directly without traditional offramps.

Regulatory Victory

The roadmap’s release follows a major regulatory victory for MetaMask, as the U.S. SEC dropped its lawsuit against the company. This development allows MetaMask to focus entirely on building and innovating, with CEO Joe Lubin expressing optimism for 2025 as a transformative year for Ethereum and ConsenSys.
